5 IDEAS: 5 Inspiring Front Door Ideas to Make Your Home Stand Out

There is nothing like a good first impression, and for your home the front door is exactly that. You have a lot of options for how to create that look, so today I thought that we could review a few ideas from some of our best Interior Design projects and maybe give you some inspiration for your own home.

1. Simple Glass and Metal

This home in Northern Californias, Silicon Valley, has a simple metal and glass front door. It creates an inviting feel as it allows you to peek inside which creates a sense of openness and warmth, almost as if you are invited right in.

Sometimes it’s the most simple of gestures that can make a big impact, so that is where I thought I would start. This home in Northern Californias, Silicon Valley, has a simple metal and glass front door. It creates an inviting feel as it allows you to peek inside which creates a sense of openness and warmth, almost as if you are invited right in. This type of door works very well in a situation where the layout of the home means that you are not constantly walking in front of the glass, which can be quite uncomfortable, or for a door that does not have a direct view to the street. Another possible option would be to introduce some frosted glass elements which would help with the privacy issues.

2. Classic Dutch Door

This home in Newport Beach is a classic American style and the red painted dutch door is exactly the pop of color that it needed.

I have to admit, this style is one of my personal favorites. I love the idea that you can have a relationship with the street and your front garden without sacrificing privacy and for that matter security for small kids and pets. This home in Newport Beach is a classic American style and the red painted door is exactly the pop of color that it needed. I think you will agree that there is something about a red door that is really special. Another idea would be to have glass in the top part of the door which still allows light and view even when the weather is not perfect.

3. Decorative Iron Door

A Mediterranean style wrought iron front door.

One of the hallmarks of the Mediterranean style is the wrought iron front door. In a lot of cases it actually has two parts the iron grill can stay closed while the glass panel can swing open, this allows for fresh air and ventilation without sacrificing security, which was important in medieval Spanish towns, now it is just a convenience. While this door has a fairly simple linear design, this type of door can get quite ornate and become a fantastic decorative element in what is otherwise usually a fairly simple facade.

4. Double Doors

A grand double heigh entry way with another set of doors above the entry doors.

As luxury Interior Designers in Los Angeles we are lucky to be invited to work on some spectacular homes, a lot of which have grand entry ways, often double height. In these situations having the ability to do another set of doors above the entry doors is a great opportunity to let in much more light and ventilation than a window would provide. It’s also a great way to create an entry piece that faces the street with a lot of impact. In this home we did a precast concrete door surround that tied both sets of doors together in a unified way, making for a much more impressive look.

5. Wood and Glass

In this home which had a modern tropical feel to it, we used a simple wood and glass door, but then, using the same teak, we created a slat awning that amplifies the effect of the door.

Simple materials used in creative ways can make for a big impact. In this home which had a modern tropical feel to it, we used a simple wood and glass door, but then, using the same teak, we created a slat awning that amplifies the effect of the door. It was a simple use of materials but with a dramatic result that can be seen as you walk up to the front door and gives you an introduction to the home and what lies within.

Making a decision about the front door is really about making a decision about the message you want your home to send to the street. It can be about openness and transparency or about style and architecture, but whatever you choose, find something that reflects who you are and what you want to say about your family. Always remember that at Mark Cutler Design we are about creating homes and environments that truly reflect the people who inhabit them, reach out and see what we can do for your next design project.
