5 Luxury American Furniture Brands You Should Know

Hey there! I remember writing an article a while back about some amazing American furniture designers that you should definitely be aware of. I highlighted five legendary designers who played a major role in creating modern design classics that we still use today. One of the designers, Florence Knoll, even went on to establish a successful furniture brand that is still going strong. But today, I wanted to chat with you about some of the top luxury furniture brands in the USA that you should absolutely check out. Keep in mind that this is just a starting point - there are so many other brands out there that I'm sure I'll need to cover in a future post, so keep an eye out for that!

Gregorious Pineo

Have you heard of Gregorious Pineo? I'm absolutely obsessed with this luxury furniture brand at the moment and think that anyone who loves design should definitely check them out. Based in Los Angeles, this brand was founded by George Masser and Doug Kinzey and they've truly created something special. Their furniture line is a perfect blend of hand craftsmanship and modern design. They offer a range of modern rustic designs that showcase extraordinary metal work and wood finishes that you won't find anywhere else. And the best part is, they're not just limited to furniture - they also offer lighting, textiles, and accessories, so you can really immerse yourself in their world. I can't recommend Gregorious Pineo enough - it's a truly fantastic place to be!

The Bantu Coffee table has a textured top and beautiful details.

Favorite Piece:

It’s hard to narrow it down to just one, but the Bantu Coffee table is hard to pass up, the textured top is unlike anything I have ever seen before and is the perfect example of traditional techniques done in new ways.

Hellman Chang

Have you heard the incredible story of Hellman Chang? It's truly inspiring. The brand was founded by two friends, Daniel Hellman and Eric Chang, who were self-taught woodwork enthusiasts working out of a suburban garage. Fast forward to today and they're now leaders in modern American artisanal furniture design. Their mission? To prove that the best furniture doesn't have to come from France or Italy - it can come from right here in Brooklyn, New York. Hellman Chang starts with a deep respect for their materials and creates pieces that push the boundaries of style and engineering. Their designs are dynamic and the finishes are exquisite. And what's really unique is that they bring a personal sense of style to each piece that is hard to separate from the furniture itself. It's no wonder that Hellman Chang is a go-to for luxury furniture brands in the USA.

The z Dining table from Hellman Chang.

Favorite Piece:

The Z Dining table is one of their most exciting pieces. The construction of the base requires exacting engineering and the way it is executed highlights exactly what this brand is about, using materials in a way that highlights its strengths and allows the viewer to see it in a new and often unexpected way. With precision execution  this table demands attention.

Sutherland Furniture

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite luxury furniture brands in the USA - Sutherland. It's a brand that grew out of a successful multi-line design showroom founded by David Sutherland and John Hutton. They realized that there was a need for outdoor furniture that was just as well-crafted and comfortable as the furniture they were selling for inside luxury homes. And so, they were the first to create fully upholstered outdoor furniture. With their outdoor fabric line Perennials, they set the standard for what outdoor furniture could be. The teak performance pieces are truly next-level in terms of luxury and comfort. I've found myself turning to Sutherland time and time again when it comes to outdoor furniture. Their pieces are just so good!

The Louis Soleil Chauffeuse outdoor chair from Sutherland Furniture

Favorite Piece:

Although I have pieces that I use more, nothing embodies this brand for me more than the Louis Soleil Chauffeuse. This chair was a revelation, we could finally start to decorate outdoor rooms in the same way we did inside, with a well curated collection of pieces that sit together, instead of the entire suite of furniture look that had become the industry standard.

Quintus

I wanted to tell you about another amazing luxury furniture brand - Quintus. It was founded by Jobi Blachy, who isn't a designer but has had a lifelong passion for the design industry. And with the help of design icon Roger Thomas, they've created a brand that isn't just about the quality of their furniture - it's about a set of values around how a furniture company should be run. And let me tell you, those values include honesty, integrity, and something that's rare in this industry - delivering on time, every time. Thomas, who's known for his innovative designs in Las Vegas, has brought a more pared-down version to Quintus. Their modern pieces are rooted in tradition but still have that creative touch that he's become so well-known for. It's no wonder that Quintus is a favorite among top Los Angeles interior designers.

A dove sofa that feels fresh and new but with elements of a deco style.

Favorite Piece:

It’s hard to make a new sofa style, it seems that it has all been done. The dove sofa though feels fresh and new but with elements of an almost deco style it feels like an instant classic and a true statement piece.

Robert James

A bed with a collected, modern, rustic feel to it. It has a rustic wooden headboard and white linens.

Let me tell you about Robert James Furniture - it's one of my favorites! It was founded by Erik Voght, who you may already know from his previous brand Artifacts International, which embodied the quintessential California look of the 80s and 90s. But Robert James is his newest brainchild, starting from scratch in 2014. The brand is all about the juxtaposition between organic textures and clean, modern lines. And let me tell you, it's a look that's versatile enough to use in a relaxed beach house or an urban loft. The designs are clean, straightforward, and have a quiet confidence that makes them instant favorites. And this seems to be a common thread through all of these luxury furniture brands in the USA - there's a deep respect not just for the raw materials but also for the craftsmanship that goes into turning them into beautiful pieces of furniture. What could be more American than that?

Favorite Piece:

This was a difficult choice as there are a couple of Robert James Dining Table options that are amazing, so check them out as well. It is harder than you might think to find a bed with a collected, modern rustic feel to it. This bed reminds me of one I once created for a client using an antique Spanish door that we repurposed. It would work as well in a modern setting as a counterpoint or in a rustic traditional home as well. The scale is perfect and I think would be an ideal statement piece in any home.
