5 IDEAS: Choosing Bedroom Colors to Match your Mood

Color is a very powerful tool, it has been proven time and again that the color you choose for a room can affect the way you feel in a space, so selecting the right paint color can be one of the most difficult choices in a remodel or decorating project. I have posted before some of my favorite white colors as well as a list of my favorite pink paint colors, but how can you match your mood to the right color?

First of all you need to decide what is the mood you are trying to create in the room, and that will vary person by person. Here are some ideas of different moods and the kind of colors that will help you create that mood.

1. Serene / Grey

A modern bedroom with a grey platform bed. The walls are painted a light grey and surrounded by monotone decor. A grey bedroom color invokes calm and serenity.

5 IDEAS: Choosing Bedroom Colors to Match your Mood

Think, quiet classical music with misty calm mornings and you start to get a sense of the serenity of a grey on grey bedroom. This is the color for people who want to retreat from the world and disconnect. Look for a grey that leans either toward soft blue or even lavender as both of these will give you visual interest and not feel like a concrete bunker.

2. Passion / Red

A bedroom with a red wall, crisp linens on the bed with mostly white and accent stripes. The side tables are rustic wood. A red bedroom color invokes passion.

There are few colors that are so closely tied as red and passion. So creating a Red painted bedroom is a big commitment and one that will create a room of intensity and amor. If a full room of this color feels daunting, try painting one wall (probably the bed wall) or even the ceiling this color. It will inject energy into the space without being overwhelming.

3. Neutral / White

A bedroom with white walls, a bed with a wooden headboard and brown accent duvet and pillows. A white bedroom color allows you to project any mood.

Sometimes it’s the most simple, straightforward approach that is the best. A white painted bedroom is a perfect backdrop for a busy life. It allows you to project onto it any mood. Therefore it is a great choice for busy people and for someone who may use their bedroom a lot during the day as well. White will project a bright and fresh feeling. White paint can be a tough one to nail, so check out my list of Favorite white paint colors for inspiration.

4. Restful / Pink

A bedroom with a muted shade of pink on the walls and a darker pink on the pillows and duvet. A pink bedroom color gives a quiet, restful feeling.

If what you are looking for is a quiet, restful place to retreat to, look no further than a shade of pink for your room. This color will create harmony and rest. I think there is something about reflecting your skin tones that makes it feel like you are part of the space, it creates a serenity and a feeling of belonging. I created my ultimate guide to choosing the right pink paint color, be sure to check it out.

5. Uplifting / Yellow

A bedroom with a pale taupe-yellow wall and a white ceiling. The bed's duvet and throw pillows have a deeper yellow pattern. A yellow bedroom color invokes sunny mornings and candlelight.

This is the one for a morning person. If you want to wake up every day and feel like the sun is shining, then this is the paint choice for you. I have to admit, this is my choice. To be in a room that is washed in pale warmth during the day and feels like candlelight at night is the ideal bedroom for me, but hey, we are all different right?

You don’t always have control over how you feel in your home, but you do have control over the color that you paint it, and it may be time for a change.

  • Has it been more than 5 years since you changed up the color?

  • Does it make you feel sad or drab being in that space? That is not how your bedroom should make you feel.

  • Or maybe it’s the furniture and the drapery that is bringing you down.
