5 IDEAS: Best Bedroom Decorating Tips

Bedroom designs can be challenging projects. Although the goal is pretty simple, create a room to sleep in, most of our bedrooms do a lot more than that and juggling those various jobs can be challenging. As one of the top Los Angeles Interior Design firms, we are often given great spaces to work with, but I think the decor ideas we use in these luxury homes can be applied as design ideas no matter what space or budget you are working on.

Here are some of my best ideas for bedroom design or remodel.

1. Have somewhere to sit other than the bed

A bedroom design should incorporate somewhere else for you to sit.

While there is no question that the bed is the star of this show and needs to be super comfortable as well. I am a big believer that a bedroom should also have somewhere else for you to sit. A good bedroom design is about creating a sanctuary or retreat, this is perfect for sleeping but can also be a great place for relaxing, reading or listening to music, so having other options for seating outside of the actual bed can make this a much better experience.

2. Any rug is the right rug

A rug adds luxury and a tactile experience in a bedroom design.

When people ask me for Bedroom design ideas, one of my most popular ones is the idea that any rug is better than no rug in the bedroom. I like what a rug does for the space, it helps to create luxury, makes for a tactile experience on your feel and makes a more layered and interesting look for the room.

3. Bench at the foot of the bed

A bench at the foot of a bed makes an ideal spot for packing.

We have all had those days where we walk into our bedroom and just want to dump our stuff, whether its bags, clothes or books. The bed is not the place for that, and this is why I like to create a dedicated piece of furniture that allows us to be ourselves in those moments but also helps to keep the room organized and ordered. Also you will thank me next time you are packing for a trip, a bench is the ideal spot for a suitcase that is being packed.

4. Lighting is Everything

Lighting in a bedroom is provided by a modern side lamp.

This rule applies to almost every room in your home, but especially here. The color of your bedroom will also have a lot to do with how you create light in here, and you can read more about that here. The best rule to remember is have more light than you think you will ever need and put it on dimmers. There are times in a bedroom where bright light is needed, when you are getting dressed, packing or when you drop that contact lens. There are also times when dim, mood light is what the moment requires, so have a variety of options from downlights, table lamps and standing lamps, this will allow you to have that ultimate design luxury, choice.

5. No Clutter

A clutter-free bedroom design with a storage plan.

I mentioned this earlier, but your bedroom is a sanctuary or at least a retreat, and to make the most of this, you need to cut down on the clutter. To do this create a storage plan, everything should have a place that makes sense and be close to the point of use. This is why I like bedside tables that are a combination of closed and open storage, it gives you the most flexibility.
