5 Ways to Make Your Bedroom Cozy

Now that the hubbub of the holidays is over, the reality of winter really sets in and for the next few months, at least, making our bedroom warm and cozy is a huge priority. Beyond winter though, having a bedroom that is an inviting oasis should always be a goal. Here are 5 ways to make your bedroom a cozy retreat.

1. Lighting

Natural light and lamps provide a lovely, cozy atmosphere for this bedroom. The bed is flanked by a side table with books and two large green plants.

One of the easiest things to control is in fact one of the most important elements to an inviting bedroom–lighting. Being able to control the level of light allows you to switch up your bedroom from a place where you are relaxing and watching tv to a romantic getaway for you and your partner. You can do this with a variety of light sources. Use both ceiling fixtures as well as table lamps and even floor lamps that illuminate mostly the ceiling. Remember, everything on dimmers and a combination of task and mood lighting will give you the flexibility that you need.

2. Bedding

A luxurious bed with canopy curtain, natural lighting, and side tables.

This is of course one of the most fundamental elements of a bedroom. Do not just go with the most well priced thing you can find on Amazon, or for that matter the most expensive that you can find. Try out as many options as you can from percale to sateen and also a variety of different thread counts to find one that is right for you (insert Goldilocks reference here). Seriously though, take your time on this one as it can make a world of difference to the way you use your room. Also pay attention to maintenance. If you are a casual person, investing in bedding that needs to be professionally laundered, or a more formal person investing in linen bedding that gives that lived in look, will always leave you unhappy.

3. Function

A bedroom that is comfortable and has function. The bed is flanked by a sidetable/desk with a chair beside it.

There is luxury in simplicity and if ever there was a room that demanded luxury it is your bedroom. So how can you make it more simple? Make sure everything has its place. Instead of a charger by the bed, I prefer a charging pad. I find it more discreet and less intrusive. Have a way to easily switch lights on, off and dim. If you don’t have a switch near your bed, consider voice controls for your lighting. Also you may want to consider an electric motor on your window coverings. It is the ultimate luxury to lay in bed and open and close the shades.

4. Seating

A cozy bedroom with a large four poster canopy style bed accented with blue. A seating area contains two comfortable armchairs in a window nook.

If you do it right, spending time in your new, cozy bedroom can be a great experience, so why not have another place to be rather than in bed. Having a comfortable chair can create a serene place away from the rest of your home, to read a book or even to sit on while you slip into a pair of shoes. Now not every room will have the space for a chaise or even a chair and ottoman, but creating an extra seating spot can add a lot more versatility to your room.

5. Cover the windows

I know a lot of people really enjoy the black out experience in their bedroom, and in fact almost require it to sleep after the sun is up. I happen not to be one of those people. In fact, I love a bright open bedroom. However, even with this in mind, having window coverings is an important part of the aesthetic of the room. Whether it’s blackout, sheers or standing panels, the softness afforded by window treatments adds a quiet luxury to a room that is hard to achieve in another way.

So whether you are looking for a cozy dark retreat or a bright serene hideaway these 5 ideas will help you create the bedroom of your dreams– yes pun intended!
