Modern Traditional Sitting Room

This Sitting Room is one of my favorite rooms that we have designed. It has an effortlessly chic feel to it and really embodies a lot of the design ideas that we talk about a lot. It has a mix of both textures and style to create a room that just feels like a great place to sit and enjoy the sunshine.

Here are 5 tips for creating your own Sitting Room with a Modern Traditional Style.

1. Get the Seating Right

Almost by definition a Sitting Room needs great seating. I like to use a small scale fully upholstered arm chair. I think it gives you the best combination of comfort and support and the cluster of four identical chairs allows you to move around the space to take advantage of the light and views at various times of the day. Adding an ottoman instead of a coffee table also gives you a guilt free option of a place to put your feet.

2. Don’t forget about Lighting

While you may use a room like this mostly during the day, even then having additional lighting is a great idea. Using both a ceiling light to give general brightness and the floor lamps to give you a more intimate feeling will give you lots of ability to control the mood.

I really enjoy the contrast of the two styles too. The beaded ceiling fixture gives an almost Boho vibe to the space, while the metal standing lamp creates a more streamlined modern approach.

3. Use the Rug to Anchor the seating area

A woven natural patterned rug lends itself to a circular form and helps warm up a sitting room.

A rug can do a lot of different things in a room, but in this space you want to use the rug to create a more intimate and focused seating area. The woven natural pattern naturally lends itself to a circular form and the more casual feel of the rug helps to warm up the space. I really like this type of rug and could see it being used in a breakfast room just as easily.

4. Don’t forget the accessories

While it is true that you shouldn't forget the accessories in most rooms, it is especially true in rooms like this that are designed for you to linger. Having small design details like the brass art piece or even a splash of color and texture in the pillows, will increase the enjoyment you get in the room. I would also add some framed family images too. Anything that is going to make you feel more connected to the space.

5. Make sure you have a space like this

It can be really easy to create a beautiful home that is meant to be looked at. We create homes that are meant to be lived in, and that means creating spaces that are able to evoke a mood or to fill a need. In this case a room off the side of the house became a space to step away, indulge in a book or just quietly check out. Having spaces like this in a home may feel indulgent, I think they actually are vital, especially now when we spend so much more time in our homes.
